I don't know what you lads do for work and when you last went for an interview but I could use some advice/opinions.

I'm not applying for executive management or corporate jobs and I don't see the point in buying a suit so the only question is should I buy posh trousers and a proper shirt/shoes that I won't feel comfortable wearing or should I just go smart-casual and show a true reflection of my personality? I obviously won't attend interviews in jog bottoms and trainers so I hope you understand what I mean by smart-casual.

I was once told that if one turns up in a tie and the other doesn't that the person in the tie would get the Job.. Even if the no tie man had better qualifications. Make of it what you will. If it was me I'd always make the effort and wear a shirt and trousers as a minimum.

Posh twat lol. You must have a very secure career in middle/senior management.
I knew you weren't short of a few quid when you were talking about holidays to Dubai while the rest of us were struggling with the cost of living crisis and the price of a bunch of fucking bananas :ROFLMAO:

I'm anything but posh mate lol.
Your not far off the mark though, made good decisions when I was younger which have worked out really well. That & a lot of hard work, much of which was in my own time, gaining numerous qualifications.
It's mainly consultancy work I do now which gives me a lot more free time.

All credit to you for your achievements mate and it's good to see you showing a little bit of personality/sense of humour. That's something seriously missing on this site at the moment.

Back on topic though and being serious....do you really think a suit (or even shirt/tie/trousers) is appropriate for all job interviews and will impress the interviewer? Lets say for example you were going for a job as a warehouse operative or a delivery driver or a bricklayer etc etc etc..would you always wear a suit and would that be the appropriate attire for jobs like that when you know that's not how the boss or other employees will dress on a daily basis? Smart casual seems to be the new trend with younger people....or am I wrong?

I would always wear a suit to an interview because it is a formal process & I like to create a good first impression. I've formed part of a panel which interviewed candidates for posts & it definitely matters.

Saying that, a suit would be the business attire I would be expected to wear at least in part.

Your right though for the jobs you quote a suit is probably a bit over dressed, a smart shirt & trousers would be more appropriate.

I'm applying for some positions that aren't very glamorous and I feel really awkward wearing fancy clothes so I think I'm going to go "smart casual/trendy/funky" but only in sedate/professional colours and see the reaction in the first few interviews.

I've never worn a suit or "posh tackle" ever....

I've been thinking about what you said and would like your opinion again. I'm sticking with the smart-casual approach but I've decided to dress "less funky" for any interviews and will only wear a smart white buttoned shirt, pressed slacks, nice pair of boots, and a designer leather jacket or trendy overcoat. The question now is about ties. Plain or patterned? I still want to maintain my character and let the interviewer know I'm not the average drone/jobsworth so, in your opinion as an interviewer, what would you think about a smart looking guy who chose to wear a bold/statement/colourful tie instead of something plain and neutral?

Interviews are psychological warfare lol

Personally, i wouldn't go with a bold statement tie. I always wore a neutral tie, still do on the business occasions I need to wear one these days.
I was advised years ago not to wear anything too flashy. So leave your Rolex at home.

Saying that the people that interviewed me held senior positions & were generally a good bit older.

Plenty time to show your not a drone when you've secured the job.
